Jealous of time

"Time heals all wounds"

they say.

Does the body ever roll its eyes as time accepts credit

for the hard work of healing?

As if the hands of the clock might reach into our bodies to

stop the bleeding.

Can time summon cells or strengthen sinew?

Time does not heal; healing merely requires time

among other things

like bandaging the wounds and setting the bones and

drawing the poison and avoiding the temptation to

pick at the scab.

Of course, not all wounds heal.

Are these only a matter of time?

Stubborn wounds who refuse to listen

to the beating of the clock.

They would say that "enough time has passed; you must be healed."

But we know better. Healing is hard work

unlike watching the clock.
